Glazings for Solstro Roof Windows
The Solstro range of roof windows is designed as a cost-effective alternative to VELUX. Both window sizes and glazings are limited: windows come in 7 different key sizes and there is no possibility to choose a specific glazing type. Here are the two versions you will find on a Solstro roof window:
Double glazing (B500):
Laminated Safety Glazing (B800):
Available to all PVC range
Double glazing is effectively 2 sheets of glass - a toughened outer pane and a standard inner pane. The 2 panes of glass are separated by a gas filled vacuum (argon). The idea of this type of glazing is to provide insulation and to reduce the transfer of heat (so the heat you have in your home stays inside and the cold stays outside better). Condensation is also generally reduced with double glazing. Triple glazing offers an extra pane of glass.
The Solstro range of roof windows (with the exception of Solstro PVC roof windows) uses double glazing as standard.
Laminated Safety Glazing (70 pane) is double-glazed and is the minimum standard of glazing used in VELUX roof windows. It is available in the Solstro range too but only for the Solstro PVC roof windows. This glazing is designed with safety in mind and should therefore be your first choice, if you are looking for windows above head height or in children’s bedrooms.
They have a toughened outer pane as usual but the real benefit is that the inner pane is laminated. This means that if the glass would break, the broken parts are held in place between the 2 layers of glass and will not shatter or fall to the floor - very similar to the windscreens of modern cars.
Triple Glazed (66 pane) is triple-glazed and is known as extra low energy glazing. If you are looking for a roof window that will offer excellent sound reduction and maximum protection against heat loss, then this is your best option. It features a laminated inner pane (see laminated safety glazing) so not only does the 66 pane have excellent heat and sound insulation properties but you have peace of mind too. This makes it an ideal choice for children’s bedrooms in cold areas (e.g. north facing rooms or older properties), if you live on a busy road or just anywhere you want peace and quiet and to make the most savings in energy bills.
An extra feature of this particular glazing is the easy-to-clean coating. This helps breaking down dirt on the outside of the window meaning that the glazing stay gleaming for longer. Perfect for those who live on busy roads or dusty track areas.
Obscure Glazing (opaque) (34 pane) is double-glazed and should be your primary choice, if you are looking for privacy. This VELUX glazing comes has an opaque inner pane, which provides a frosted look to the window pane – however, does not compromise the amount of natural daylight coming in. This makes it the ideal choice for bathrooms.
This roof window is double glazed and provides a good level of heat and sound insulation with a U-value of 1.2. The obscure glazing is also a laminated safety pane, ensuring this is a safe option for all types of rooms.
Noise reduction glazing (60 pane) is a double-glazed roof window with great sound reduction qualities. It offers increased sound insulation, particularly against rain noise (which is important as a roof window on a pitched roof is always going to get hit by rain).
And is a good choice, if you live in an area with lots of traffic, on a busy road or just anywhere you want peace and quiet. It is estimated that this 60 Pane VELUX glazing blocks out up to 50% of outside noise.
Another added benefit of this glazing, is sun protection and easy to clean coatings. UV protection protects you from the sun and prevents furnishings from fading. The easy to clean coating breaks down dirt on the outer pane, reducing cleaning time frequency. So, in the long run this glazing can save you time and money, and of course help you get that perfect night’s sleep
Enhanced Noise reduction glazing (62 pane) is triple-glazed and offers the best in noise reduction of all the VELUX glazing options available. An ideal choice if you live in a busy town or city or an area that suffers from a lot of traffic noise where early morning commuters can wake you up sooner that you would like.
The heat insulation properties are excellent too, helping you save money on your heating bills and keeping you toasty and warm on those cold days.
An extra benefit of this VELUX 62 pane roof window glazing, is its anti-dew coating. This helps prevent condensation on the outside of the window meaning your view will not be limited at any time.
This roof window glazing does not come with the easy to clean coating that the 66 and 60 VELUX panes do, so if you do live in a particularly busy or dusty/industrial area then you might want to consider a 60/66 pane glazing option as an alternative. The main difference between the 62 and the 66 pane is, that this option does not come with the easy to clean coating mentioned before.
Security Pane Glazing (70Q pane) is double-glazed and has the key benefit of high security It is an excellent choice if you want that extra feeling of security and peace of mind or for lower level roof windows that could be easily reached by potential intruders. It consists of a toughened outer pane and laminated inner panes that, when added to a reinforced construction and extra locks, ensure a high-level of protection. The reinforced screws around the hinges of the roof window and glue around the roof window pane to the sash, stops anyone from forcing entry by dismantling the window pane itself.
The Security 70Q has been tested to provide resistance against manual attack and is approved by European Standards as a certified burglary resistant window (Class 2).
*please note that in some cases not all glazing options will be available in all window types.
